The brand faced a delicate balance: elevating Genesee’s presence and perception while retaining the accessibility and value that have always defined it, particularly in an economic moment where drinkers are paying closer attention to value than ever. This balance is ever more important with the backdrop of a declining beer category—a $3 easy drinking lager is what so many drinkers are looking for in these trying times.
GENERATIONS OF GRINDERS
In Rochester, Genesee is more than just a beer. It’s part of the city’s story. The brewery has remained a constant presence while many companies have moved on. During Prohibition, the brand famously kept its doors open by producing bread instead of beer to keep workers employed—one of many examples of the brand’s deep ties to the community. And today, the Genesee Brewery still employs over 550 local Rochesterians, many of them 2nd- or 3rd-generation members of the Genesee family.
We re-defined Genesee’s strategic foundations to celebrate these builders of the past, present and future, who are too often overlooked, but are never irrelevant. Genesee is the beer that sees your hard work and cheerses to it.
BEHIND THE SEEN
We landed on a brand world idea that strips back the curtain to reveal the unseen where we truly thrive - behind the scenes. The idea brings hard work into view and celebrates the brewers, workers, and everyday drinkers who have supported the brand over generations.
It exposes the beauty & power in the process and champions the craft, skill & resourcefulness we bring to solve every challenge. It’s time we celebrate hard work - the passion we have for it, the pride we get out of it, and the fun we have with it.
A HARD WORKING PACK SYSTEM
The packaging task was to strengthen what is truly iconic about Genesee, while bringing greater consistency across a complex portfolio of core and specialty brews and expressing the new creative idea.
We also introduced a consistent illustration style across the portfolio. The style nods to progress rather than nostalgia, revealing the “workings” behind the beer and celebrating local pride in the brewery — honest, hardworking, playful enough for Specialty and unmistakably Genesee.
LEGACY LIVES HERE
We crafted a new wordmark inspired by the iconic Genesee sign at the brewery — grounding the brand more firmly in place and heritage. From there, we built out a whole suite of assets for the brand, with guidance & visualizations on how to express the brand KBAs off pack. All of this worked to elevate a basic brand to one that felt bold, storied and iconic again.
The new design system brings greater clarity and confidence to Genesee’s most recognizable features. A redrawn logotype draws from historic lettering found across the brand’s past, from early 1900s van liveries to the brewery sign that still stands today. The iconic “Red Eye” has been refined into a more defined, contemporary silhouette, reinforcing its role as a distinctive and meaningful brand asset. The ‘G Stalk’ icon, long present across brewery touchpoints since the early 1900’s, but had lost its prominence on pack over the years, is reintroduced with a more crafted presence.
New storytelling elements also bring the “Behind the Seen” idea to life, including actual notes from their master brewers’ process, and a composite illustration of the brewery and its surrounding landscape, bringing a gritty, handcrafted feel to Genesee’s incredible legacy. Together, these components form a cohesive packaging system across the core and specialty range—uniting the portfolio under a more confident and consistent brand expression.
SEE THE GRIND
Launched in May 2026, Genesee’s new brand feels true to its legacy but built for today and tomorrow. The new identity spans brand strategy, visual identity, packaging design, portfolio architecture, and guidelines, creating a flexible foundation for Genesee’s next chapter and rolling out updated primary and secondary packaging across convenience stores and retailers in the northeast.
It marks the beginning of a new chapter, one that celebrates nearly 150 years of Rochester brewing history while introducing the iconic brand to an even broader audience.
